Discussion:
colored copper wire?

Hello. I was wondering if permanently-colored, silver copper wire can
be used, and look good, as a poor person's sterling silver wire for
necklaces, earrings, etc. I am selling and, of course, wouldn't
misrepresent the material as sterling. Yes, I am poor. I admit it.

You're talking about plated wire. I've used quite a bit of it myself,
but more for practice than anything else. The plating will discolor
or come off sooner or later. You'll sell some, but it's a different
market than the sterling market.

I don't know if the copper fad is still going, but have you tried
using just plain copper wire, maybe with a non-tarnish coating?

I know. We have a lot of that here, but I didn't want to say it that
way (and I don't know how much that market segment are buying at the
moment. Money is always tight here, and it's tighter now).

Shawn, if you think it's only good for the "peasant market", why do
you want to use it?

I'm too clumsy to use cheap materials without wrecking them, so I
stick with sterling.

But if you do choose to use them, you'll be much more successful if
you direct your energy in a more positive direction. Coated wire is
for the "fun" market, or is "whimsical". If you don't respect your
material, for whatever value, your work will show it.

It depends on how you are going to be using it. I wouldn't use it for
chain maille, but for wrapped loops and similar applications, it is
fine. You can buy non-tarnish silver colored wire. Just don't list it
as being sterling and you'll be fine.

I love it, to tell you the truth. I use it as bails in some of my
polyclay pendants. Unfortunately, I've been criticized (not by anyone
here) about using it in my work. Pffft.

I still use it. :P

Nothing wrong with being poor. Many people are experiencing the pinch
and soon thrift will be the new fad. lol!

Hey Valerie,

I took a look at your site. I like the "name change". I always like
using one's name for artwork, same as one would use their own name for
scholarly work or work as a lawyer (or other professional).

You've been here at rcb for such a long time. And you're so young!!

How are you liking Arizona? What part do you live in? My daughter
lives in Sedona. Karen and Nichole (Black Cat) are both near Phoenix,
I believe. You've gone from steamy to sere!

Thanks Tina! That was the BF's doing; he's clever like that. :) He
started out his using his name (he writes and does graphics and
photography), so it was only natural that he do it. He convinced me that
it was a good way to go. And in doing so someone from my past, a long
lost family friend, found me! I was delighted! I also got her back in
touch with other family.

AZ is gorgeous, but we aren't staying too long (but I get a feeling I'll
be here longer than I want). The summers here just kill me. I thought I
was prepared for the heat, but it is so different there is no
preparation. Of course you could prepare by sticking your head in the
oven, it's that type of heat. lol! ;)Ed wants to finish school here.
He's on his way to an AA, but may try for a BA either in the field he is
studying or something different like English so he can teach perhaps. Of
course that's another 5 years. But it's still up in the air. The sooner
I'm out of this heat the better. I'd consider moving into the mountains,
but Ed hates cold winters, we we'd probably move back to the east coast
somewhere, S. Carolina or Tennessee (we both have family/friends in
those areas). They have winter, but at least it has humidity, lol!

I'm in the Phoenix area as well and have met up with Nicole many times.
I haven't met Karen here though.

We had planned on heading up to Sedona with the dogs for a day trip this
weekend actually, but I came down with a cold or allergies so we may do
it next weekend. We haven't been up there in a while and thought we
should take advantage of the nice weather we've been having! I can't
tromp through the woods like Ed can but there are plenty of places to
poke around in without having to hike.

How are you doing in Alaska? I love all the stories you tell about it.
It seems like it's almost like another planet, much like the desert is
here! You have to adapt to the new way of life I suppose. It's neat to
hear about. :) I have a friend who's father just moved up there. I want
to say it was Fairbanks, but my memory is poor these days, so I can't
trust what I think. ;) I'd love to go see the glaciers some day. It's
the only trip I've ever really wanted to do, and yet it's still in the
States. I guess I'm not that glamorous. ;)

Looks like this got OT! Whoops

Valerie, do you get up to Flagstaff sometimes. It's higher elevation
and cooler than Phoenix. And on the way there's this really cool
place called Montezuma's Well. It's a deep pit of water that you can
look down into from just off the highway. And you can walk around to
the back side of the pit, because it's like a cup. Water escapes out
the back in a stream that used to be used for crop irrigation -- I
think it extended for miles.

If you do get up to Sedona, my son-in-law has a wonderful restaurant
called Elote, at the King's Ransom Hotel on the way into Sedona from
Phoenix. It's world class Mexican Cuisine. The spinach mushroom
enchiladas are scrumptious. My daughter teaches Yoga.

A long time ago I read a book about the desert called Desert Solitaire
by Edward Abbey, who is better known as an environmentalist. I've
never read a book that reminded me so much of the North. Both "like
another planet".

If you ever do get up this way we'd be happy to put you up.
