viking knit compared to french knit?

Hi all,

with all the spam going on, while this isn't a bead post at this
point,
it's a beaded jewelry post. I read a bunchh of stuff about viking knit
and
decided this isn't something I can do. However, it reminded me of the
knitting
spool I had when I was a kid. I looked it up on the web today and
found it's
called French knit, got myself a new knitting spool today (much to my
surprise
Ben Franklin has those) and started a rather disorderly 32ga French
knit

Other than that you make one inside a dowel (or other) with a hole
inside
and wind the wire around the outside and the other around the outside
of
a dowel (and use short bits of wire), can somebody explain to me what
the real
difference is in the result?

OK, I thought the knitting spool wouldn't work with wire (or cotton,
or raffia,
anything that isn't really flexible/expandable). It most certainly
does. I now
understand how and why.

While my 32ga wire knit looks nothing like any viking knit I have
seen,
other than the tools and methods used, is there really any
difference?
(other than that my wire and knitting spool are still attached to one
another? I so far have about 15" of knit from one piece of wire, and
it's still attached)

I hope somebody here knows more than me ...

Aloha,
Maren

Scrabble, scrounge somewhere I have got one of those things. Had it a
few years but did not get on with it. Maybe the wire was no what was
needed. Must try that wire I bought for crochet.
Now what safe place did I hide it in.
St Anthony do your stuff.

Hi Shirley,

once I get done with the 32 gauge wire I'm going to try the
26 gauge wire I bought for wire crochet (they were all out
of the inexpensive 28 and 30 gauge wire, so I thought I'd
try the 32 gauge, partly because I'm getting ready for
an order that may include craft wire for local sales and
was wondering whether 28 gauge is any good, but I
think it will be, so I'm going to order some).

I think the same wire that you use in wire crochet is
good for french/viking knit. The thickest I'd want
to use is 24 gauge (dead soft, if it's sterling silver).

Aloha,
Maren
